Your 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1 (Sat) – Bienvenidos!

Turn in that OOO notification at work and meet your crew at a rooftop bar for a chill first night of getting to know each other! Drinks and Colombian buñuelo are in order.

Day 2 (Sun) – Transformation of Comuna 13

Watch this neighborhood transform itself through art and music from one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world to a gleaming and colorful artistic commune. We’ll walk through the commune with our local friends to see the transformation through their eyes.

Day 3 (Mon) – Medellin Day or Hike Through the Andes

If you’re feeling adventurous – opt in to the Adventure add-on. We’ll rent out cars and drive 2 hours outside Medellin to go hike in the Andean mountain ranges followed by rafting in the Samara river.

Day 4 (Tue) – Deep into the Coffee Heartland

Coffee is central to Colombia and we’ll go deep into the hills to visit a family-owned coffee farm. Upon arriving at the farm, we’ll explore the coffee production process, learn all about the work that goes behind a good cup of Colombian coffee, and taste some of its deliciousness! Even non-coffee lovers will enjoy their time on this beautiful farm.

Day 5 (Wed) – Exploring Guatape & El Penol

With its preserved architecture, colorful houses, and the incredible view from Piedra del Peñol, Guatape is a day adventure out of the hustle and bustle. Those who’d like can climb the 600+ steps to get to the top of the rock – it’s tough, but it’s worth it!
Low on energy? No worries. Scale the mountains in the comfort of a cable car and snap scenic pictures without breaking a sweat.

Day 6 (Thu) – Feel the Rhythm, Then Play Some Tejo!

Medellin is thriving with a rich music and dance scene. We’ll learn how to dance the Colombian way and learn how to approach locals without feeling like a tourist. And who better to help us through it than our Local Lead, Cata! Salsa, merengue, reggeaton – she’s got us covered!

Once loose, we’ll make our way to play Colombia’s national sport, Tejo! We’ll meet our local friends and throw some Tejos on small targets full of gunpowder. Of course, with a few beers.

Day 7 (Fri) – Hasta Luego!

Every trip ends with a surprise farewell event. The morning is yours to explore, but leave the evening to us for one last hoorah with your crew!

FAST FACTS

FAQS

ARE CARTAGENA AND MEDELLÍN SAFE?

You’ll be safe walking around the cities in the day, hiking popular routes, relaxing on beaches, and going to bars and restaurants at night.

But Colombia has its challenges and you should practice caution while traveling. It is not advisable to walk around in quiet streets or through a park at night, and avoid hiking alone on a secluded trail.

We suggest taking Ubers at night, which are accessible, safe and affordable. There have been a few incidents reported with petty theft. But many travelers come to these cities and travel without incident.

Remember to observe caution, move in groups at night, take Ubers and avoid secluded areas.

WHAT IS THE COVID SITUATION IN MEDELLIN?

Medellin is open to travelers at the moment with cafes and restaurants open. 1.2M+ people have been vaccinated. Regardless, our guidelines are to get vaccinated so you minimize your risk as well as risk to your local hosts.

WHY IS OOO COMFORTABLE TRAVELING TO COLOMBIA RIGHT NOW?

We’re expecting most of our group for Colombia to be traveling from the US, and with vaccines widely available by May 1st in the US, we feel comfortable getting our programs started in a safe way. Most other travel providers have already started trips to South America, but we wanted to wait an extra few months just to be sure. In addition, we’ve been monitoring the situation closely on the ground with our local guides and taking extra precautions – like private events, private transport, private rooms, apartment cleanliness, etc. – to ensure safety of our group. Having said that, things can change rapidly and you can trust us to monitor the situation and keep you informed of any changes.

WHAT STEPS IS OOO TAKING FOR COVID SPECIFICALLY?

We’re taking COVID seriously for our members and our staff. Here are some of the steps we are taking for a safe and smooth trip:

      • All OOO events will have private transportation and will be a private event where possible to minimize risk to our group and our local friends
      • Every traveler must provide proof of vaccination, or proof of a COVID test within 72 hours prior to your arrival in Medellin
      • Masks will be mandatory in public areas in accordance with guidelines from the local government
      • In case someone shows symptoms, we’ll cover 1 COVID test if needed

IS GETTING VACCINATED MANDATORY?

Although getting vaccinated is not mandatory in Colombia, they have proven to be highly effective in preventing any severe disease, and hence we are highly recommending you get vaccinated before traveling. This is precisely why OOO has waited until mid-June to host it’s first trip so people (especially in the US) have an opportunity to receive the vaccine

WILL I HAVE WIFI OR CELL SERVICE?

Yes. We only book accommodation that has WiFi. Local SIM cards are cheap at the airport but make sure to check the data plan before you buy.

HOW CAN I GET AROUND?

Most activities in Cartagena are within walking distance. For any long distance activities, we hire a driver.

In Medellín, Ubers are cheap and readily available.

ARE THERE COWORKING SPACES AND COOL COFFEE SHOPS?

Thanks to the prominent coffee culture, there’s no shortage of cool cafés, from the traditional and local hangouts in Cartagena to the more modern and sleek in Medellín.

If you need to get some work done in the beach town of Cartagena, we suggest using the comfort of your accommodation. And in urban Medellín, we can help you find a comfy coworking space, no problem.

IS THERE FOOD FOR DIFFERENT DIETS AND SAFE DRINKING WATER?

Most street food is cheap, delicious and clean but all stomachs have a different tolerance. We let you decide how daring you’d like to be.

You’ll find diverse types of food to accommodate all dietary restrictions at almost any restaurant, but vegetarians should confirm when ordering, as many dishes can include meat that may not be listed on the menu.

Tap water is ok to drink in Colombia but we recommend drinking bottled water.
