Why Portugal?

Let us whisk you away to one of the most charismatic places in Europe. We will call Lisbon and Porto home for 7 days as we slowly but surely integrate with the Portuguese way of life… Saudade! Whilst sipping on wine of-course.

The Capital City - Lisbon
Known to be one of the most charming cities in Europe, Lisbon combines the rich traditional Portuguese heritage with a modern and a progressive society. It is blessed with an amazing climate year around, a rich history, exquisite coastal cuisine and a buzzing nightlife. Lisbon is made up of several small neighborhoods, each bringing its own unique characteristics from being embedded in Moorish architecture, to presenting a labyrinth of cobblestone streets that have inspired several poets, to giving birth to a very unique musical expression called Fado.
History and Culture
Portugal has a rich and varied history with Romans, Celts and the Moors conquering it over time. The influence of these cultures are felt throughout the country in architecture, food and art due to the many explorations and voyages for trade that occurred. The different barrios in Lisbon come together to tell the eclectic story of Portugal’s past whereas Porto strongly represents the golden era of trade, all of which can still be experienced in everyday life.
Food and Markets
Okay, Portuguese food may be a mystery to those who haven’t experienced it first hand. So be ready to be amazed with all the flavors and the culinary richness even the simplest of dishes have to offer. From sales cod - Bacalhau, which is their national dish - to the flavorful Piri-Piri Chicken or the Francesinha, to the exquisite egg tart - Pasteis de Nata, you will not be disappointed. Lisbon also hosts The Time Out Market, a modern day take on traditional food halls. You can find the best of Lisbon under one roof - the best chefs, cooking experiences, cultural events, and tied to it, a farmers market, open daily with locally sourced produce.
The Beaches
Not far from Lisbon central, one can experience the beautiful coastline of western Europe, where several beaches, each boasting to be a surfer’s paradise, awaits you with pristine blue waters and gorgeous sunsets. Within a short driving distance from Lisbon, you can visit Nazare, one of the biggest wave spots (waves reaching 100+ feet), or Cabo Da Roca, the Western most point of Europe where one of the longest sunsets can be experienced.
The City of Porto
The second-largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, Oporto (as known by the locals) is a charming age-old city, built on the hills and sprawling outward with a riverside district called the Ribeira. It provides gorgeous serene views of the Duoro valley, which is the birthplace of all the delicious Port wine produced by the country. Porto is a laid-back dreamy city with ancient walls and a rich history of Portuguese culture along with diversity due to trade. Their own take on traditional food along with the perfect wine pairings is an experience you would not want to miss.

Fast Facts

Are Lisbon and Porto Safe?
We only pick cities that we have traveled to and feel safe in. Lisbon and Porto are both safe and walkable. Like any other city in the world, we recommend using general safety measures while traveling and avoiding any dark and narrow alleys at night.
Will I have Wifi or cell service?
Yes! We will only get accommodation that has WiFi. Most U.S. sim cards also work locally, depending on your data plan. Local sim-cards are sometimes cheap at the airport. Make sure to check the data plan before you buy.
How can I get around Lisbon and Porto?
Lisbon and Porto are very walkable but beware of the hilly streets. It just may have been the inspiration for the expression ‘Buns of Steel’ (not really, but you will soon know). Ubers are cheap and readily available. Lisbon also has excellent public transportation along with some famous routes on the tram (take number 28 Lisbon tram that passes through the popular districts of Graca, Alfama, Baixa and Estrela).
Are there co-working spaces and cool coffee shops?
Lisbon is a hub to the ever emerging start-up and tech culture, and has even hosted the global Web Summit for the past few years. There are plenty of cafes and co-working spaces in Lisbon which are work friendly. If you want to focus on work and take important meetings in the day, we can help you find co-working spaces nearby. We haven’t tried co-working with a side of Port wine yet though. If you are into it, we will make it happen!
Is there food for different diets and safe drinking water?
Portugal boasts of the amazingly fresh seafood, a wide variety of meats and some excitingly new vegan and vegetarian restaurants. There is truly something for everyone including the delicious desserts. The drinking water is generally safe out of the taps.
