FAST FACTS
IS CAPE TOWN SAFE?
You’ll be safe walking around the city in the day, hiking the popular routes, relaxing on beaches, and going to bars and restaurants at night.
But Cape Town has its challenges and you should practice caution while traveling. It’s not advisable to walk around in quiet streets or through a park at night and avoid hiking alone on a secluded trail.
We suggest taking Ubers at night, which are accessible, safe and affordable (less than $3-4). There have been a few incidents reported with petty theft, but many travelers come to this city and travel without incident.
Remember to observe caution, stay in groups at night, take Ubers, and avoid secluded areas.
IS THERE STILL A WATER CRISIS?
The water situation has improved a lot since 2017. With effective water conservation efforts, the discovery of new reservoirs, and a little help from mother nature, the city no longer has a “Day 0”.
Water restrictions have been removed, but we always recommend being aware and careful with water, no matter where in the world we travel.
WILL I HAVE WIFI OR CELL SERVICE?
Yes. Your accommodation has WiFi. Local SIM cards are cheap at the airport. Make sure to check the data plan before you buy.
HOW CAN I GET AROUND CAPE TOWN?
Ubers are the way to go. They are safe, affordable and arrive quickly.
ARE THERE COOL COFFEE SHOPS?
If you love exploring new coffee joints, you’re in for a treat. There are few cities in the world that can match Cape Town’s coffee culture. From steam-punk to hipster, jungle-themed cafés. Cape Town boils over with options for the coffee-aficionados.
IS THERE FOOD FOR DIFFERENT DIETS AND SAFE DRINKING WATER?
The food scene in Cape Town is diverse, catering to every palette. You can find vegan restaurants and places that serve acai bowls with chia seeds. Or seven-course meals crafted by world-renowned chefs.
Tap water is ok to drink in Cape Town but we recommend drinking bottled water.
